Section 19 (a) of the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004 mandates the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), to prepare a National Water Quality Status Report (NWQSR). In compliance with the requirement of the Act, this maiden issue of the NWQSR is produced and published to advocate support and involvement among the populace in protecting the country’s water bodies and consequently achive better water quality. This NWQSR highlights the status of all water bodies in the country, including groundwater resulting from the economic development. Assessment of the quality of this inland waters, coastal and marine waters, and groundwater is underscored in this report. The NWQSR also includes the government’s responses in terms of policies and programs to improve water quality in the country. Best practices in water quality management effectively demonstrated by government agencies, private sectors, business and industry associations, local government units, civil society, and the communities are also highlighted. This NWQSR ends with key challenges that should be addressed and prioritized to enhance the quality of this country’s water resources. Information in this NWQSR covers the period from year 2001 to 2005. This status report is published in two volumes.
