The Philippine fresh water resources are increasingly strained; the populationgrowth is leading to higher consumption; about 20 milion Filipinos do not have access to improved sanitation facilities. Water pollution has increased significantly, affecting health and well-being all over the country. This crisis often remains unnoticed, as the effects of poor water supply and sanitation tend to be overlooked and neglected. 2008 has been declared as the International Year of Sanitation. It shall remind all of us of the Millenium Development Goal target: to reduce by half the proportion of people without access to basic sanitation by 2015. In support of this goal, in April 2008 GTZ and its partner DILG held a Regional Sanitation Summit for the Visayas and Mindanao in Dumaguete City, hosted by the Province of Negros Oriental. The event was providing a forum where LGUs could present their sanitation projects and share their experiences. Sustainable and ecological sanitation will remain a core issue of the DILG-GTZ Water and Sanitation Program, and this publication of the summit documentation shall help LGUs and National Government Agencies in their flight against the silent crisis of sanitation in this country.
