The purpose of this guide to support planning and management of effective hygiene promotion for the purpose of preventing diaseas. To do this, the guide provides a systematic description of a methodology called Behavior-Centered Pragramming. Based in part on the promise of its experience with a hygiene improvement project in Hato Mayor Province, the Dominican Republic, the USAID-funded Environmental Health Project and the Pan America Health Organization collaborated with local partners to establish similar programs in the Cusco area of Peru and in Chinandega Department of Nicaragua. The guide is intended for health planners and managers in govermental, non governmental and international organizations working at the district, provincial, regional or national levels in developing countries, as well as for organizations that support programs at those levels. While the objectives is to aid user in designing and implementaing effective diarrheal disease prevention programs, the process and principles described should be helpful in planning and implementing any program that addresses child health in most settings.
